A real result: the group photo redrawn as line art, everyone in the place they stood.

The group photo

One class photo, a page for every child

The quickest way to get a room of children colouring is to give them a page with themselves on it. Upload the group photo from the first day, the class trip or the end-of-camp picnic, and Artwello redraws it as clean black-and-white line art, with everyone where they stood.

Children look for their own face first and then for their friends', so the page starts a conversation before the first crayon comes out. It also makes a better keepsake to send home than another printed photo.

  • Check your consent rules first. Use group photos only where your setting's photo policy and the parents' permission allow it.
  • Uploads stay private. Your photos and pages are visible only to your account and are never used to train AI models.
  • Make it once, print it twenty times. One page is a single PDF you can print for the whole group.

This week's theme

No photo? Describe the page in one sentence

Most weeks the page you want doesn't exist yet: "a hedgehog reading a book under an autumn tree", "the water cycle over a mountain village", "a Viking longship for Year 4". Type the sentence, and Artwello draws it as a coloring page, ready to print.

That means a coloring sheet can follow your topic instead of the other way round. The new vocabulary goes on the page, the page goes on the wall, and children who finish early have something on topic to do.

  • Seasons and festivals, drawn the way your class celebrates them, not the way a stock site guessed.
  • Topic work: animals of a habitat, a historical scene, the planets, a story you are reading together.
  • Book corners and libraries: a scene from this week's read-aloud for the children to finish while they listen.

By age

Pick the detail by age, not by style

Coloring pages for kindergarten and coloring pages for a class of ten-year-olds should not look the same. Every page has a detail level, set separately from its art style: from a handful of big shapes with very thick outlines up to dense linework for a steady hand.

So a preschool group and the oldest class at camp can colour the same picture, each at a level they can finish. If a page comes back too busy, lower the level and generate it again.

One picture at three of the 5 detail levels: crayons for the little ones, fine-tip pens for the oldest.
  • Preschool and kindergarten: the Kids and Easy levels, with thick lines and large open areas that are easy to stay inside.
  • Primary school: Standard detail, with recognisable features and no tiring texture.
  • Older children and art clubs: Detailed, for fine-tip pens and patient colouring.

A whole set

A coloring book for the whole term

Coloring Book makes a whole set of pages in one go and gives you a single PDF to print, staple or send to the print shop. Make one for a topic, one for the summer camp week, or one with a page for every child in the group to take home on the last day.

Pages in a book are made exactly like single pages, with the same styles and detail levels, so you can mix photo pages and pages from a sentence in one set.

  • One go, one file: every page of the set in a single printable PDF.
  • Ready for the copier: pages are drawn for the sheet you print on, so nothing is cropped.
  • No book surcharge: each page costs the usual 3 credits.

Early finishers

The same photo, as a puzzle

The photo that made this week's coloring page can also come back as a maze in its shape, a dot to dot or a spot-the-difference sheet. They print on the same paper, carry the same theme, and give fast finishers a second activity that isn't a blank sheet.

Each puzzle comes with an answer page, so it works as a quiet table activity or a wet-play stand-by without anyone checking every sheet.

Printing

Prints on the paper in your copier

Pick the sheet before the page is drawn: A4 or US Letter, portrait or landscape, A5 for booklets or A3 for a classroom wall. The page is drawn to that shape, so pressing print fills the paper instead of leaving a small square in the middle.

Coloring pages are pure black outlines on white, which photocopies cleanly and uses far less toner than printing a photo.

  • 10 sheet sizes, from A5 to A3, including US Letter.
  • Line art only: no grey backgrounds to eat the toner or muddy a photocopy.
  • PDF and PNG: print straight from the page, or share the file with colleagues and parents.

Short on time

Or pick a page someone already made

Not every Monday has time to make a new page. The coloring page catalogue holds pages other people have made and chosen to publish: animals, seasons, mandalas, scenes, sorted by style and detail level.

Find one, download it and print it. Every plan includes a weekly number of catalogue downloads.

Why it is worth the paper

What the research actually says

Coloring is not a lesson in itself, but it uses the skills young children are building and it is an easy way to put a topic in their hands. Here is what the studies show, and what they don't.

  1. Fine motor skill at the start of school is a strong predictor of later achievement, alongside early reading and maths. Coloring is one everyday way to practise that kind of control; the study did not test coloring itself.

Grissmer, Grimm, Aiyer, Murrah & Steele (2010). Fine motor skills and early comprehension of the world: two new school readiness indicators. Developmental Psychology 46(5).
  2. By about age three, most children can draw a circle once an adult shows them how. That is when pages with thick outlines and big shapes start to make sense.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2022). Important milestones: your child by three years. Learn the Signs. Act Early..
  3. Drawing what you are learning helps you remember it better than writing it out. The studies were mostly with adults and about drawing rather than coloring in, so treat it as a reason to put the topic on the page, not a promise.

Fernandes, Wammes & Meade (2018). The surprisingly powerful influence of drawing on memory. Current Directions in Psychological Science 27(5).
  4. In a small study, three- and four-year-olds learned more new words from the parts of a book personalised to them, and talked more while reading them. A page with the class on it uses the same idea.

Kucirkova, Messer & Sheehy (2014). Reading personalized books with preschool children enhances their word acquisition. First Language 34(3).
  5. The US National Art Education Association does not count coloring books as a method of art education. Use pages for fine-motor practice, calm-down time and topic work, and keep free drawing for art lessons.

National Art Education Association (2008). NAEA statement on coloring books. NAEA position statements.

Sources are linked under each finding. Where a study was small or measured something close to coloring rather than coloring itself, we say so.

FAQ

Questions from teachers and group leaders

Are the coloring pages free for teachers?+

You get 10 credits when you sign up, with no card: enough for 3 pages. After that a page costs 3 credits, on a monthly plan or a one-off credit pack. Once made, a page can be printed as many times as you like.

Is it safe to upload photos of the children in my group?+

Your uploads and pages are private to your account, are never published unless you choose to, and are never used to train AI models. Whether you may use a child's photo is a question for your setting's photo policy and the parents' consent, so check that first.

What detail level should I use for kindergarten or preschool?+

Start with the Kids or Easy level: very thick outlines and big open areas. Primary-age classes usually do well on Standard, and older children or art clubs on Detailed.

Can I print on A4 and US Letter?+

Yes. There are 10 sheet sizes, including A4 and US Letter in both orientations, A5 and A3. The page is drawn for the sheet you choose, so nothing is cropped when you print.

Do you have a plan for schools, clubs or camps?+

Not as a separate plan yet. Any individual plan works for a teacher or group leader today. If you want to buy for a whole school, club or camp, write to us through the contact page and we will sort out the right terms.

Can I share the pages with parents or other teachers?+

Yes. Download the PDF or PNG and send it home, put it on the class page or hand it to a colleague. Pages you make yourself have no watermark on any plan.

Are there ready-made coloring pages for the classroom?+

Yes. The public catalogue has pages other people have made and published, sorted by style and detail. Every plan includes a weekly number of downloads from it.
