Photo restoration

Bring an old photo back into focus

Restore old photos online: upload a scan or a phone picture of a print, and get it back with the faces rebuilt, the detail sharpened and the grain cleared. Add natural colour to a black-and-white one if you like.

  • faces rebuilt
  • up to 6.25 MP

  • 5 with colour

What it fixes

Grandma still looks like Grandma

Old photos are judged on whether the people in them are still recognisable, so the restoration leans faithful rather than towards a smooth, made-up face.

Faces

Blurred and faded faces are rebuilt, with eyes, mouths and expressions kept the way the photo had them.

Detail and grain

Soft scans are sharpened and enlarged, and film grain and noise are cleared from the whole picture.

Colour, if you want it

5 credits

Natural, period-appropriate colour for a black-and-white or faded photo, added before the restoration so the faces are rebuilt in colour.

It cleans up and sharpens what is in the photo. It does not redraw parts that are missing: a torn-off corner stays missing, and a deep crease may still show.

What you get

Big enough to frame

The restored photo comes back larger than you uploaded it, with the original kept beside it.

Original photo

as uploaded

Kept beside the result, untouched

Up to 6.25 megapixels without colour, about a 10 × 6″ print at 300 dpi, and up to 3.6 megapixels with colour, about 7 × 5″.

How it works

One choice, then wait

No sliders, no brushes, no layers. The settings that matter are chosen for what old family photos need.

Upload the photo

A scan, or a phone picture of the print taken straight on, in good light and without glare. The whole photo is used; nothing is cropped.

Say whether to add colour

The one choice there is. Leave it off for a photo that is already in colour.

Download the restored photo

A full-size JPEG to print or share, or carry it straight on into a coloring page, a portrait or a puzzle.

And then

Start something new from it

A restored photo can go straight into any other tool, without downloading and uploading it again: Coloring Pages, Dot to Dot, Maze, Sticker Sheets, Image Upscaler, Portrait Art or Background Remover.

FAQ

Before you upload

What does it cost?+

3 credits a photo, or 5 with colour added. Signing up gives you 10 credits (3 restorations) with no card.

Will it still look like them?+

That is what it is set up for. Faces are rebuilt leaning towards the photo as it is, not towards a generic clean face, so expressions and features are kept.

Can it fix tears and missing pieces?+

It cleans up damage across the picture and rebuilds faces, but it does not invent what is not there. A missing corner stays missing; scan the photo as flat and complete as you can.

How big is the result?+

Up to 6.25 megapixels, about 10 × 6 inches at 300 dpi, or 3.6 megapixels with colour. For a bigger print, enlarge the result with the image upscaler.

How does the colour work?+

Natural, period-appropriate colour is added to the photo as it is, with nothing added, removed or redrawn, and then the photo is restored. Leave it off for a photo that already has colour.

Who can see my photos?+

Only you. Restorations are private to your account and never appear in the public catalogue.

Can I sell or print the restored photos?+

Yes, on every plan, including the free one, with no licence to buy: print them, sell prints, or restore photos for clients. The one condition is that the photo is yours, or its owner asked you to restore it.
